Perception, scale, and unexpected shifts in meaning shape Mayera Suman’s visual practice. A self-taught artist from Odisha, Suman brings an intuitive approach to abstraction and metaphor, often using monumental imagery and dramatic contrasts to challenge how we initially read an image. Her compositions play with the relationship between the dominant and the overlooked. Large-scale forms draw the eye into the work, while smaller details introduce alternative readings and quietly alter the meaning of what first appears powerful or familiar. Through contrasts of black, white, and vivid colour, she creates visual tensions that encourage viewers to look again. A member of the House of Bhaitak collective, Suman approaches art as a space for experimentation, exchange, and connection. Her work has been exhibited in India and internationally, including presentations in Dubai and at Jehangir Art Gallery in Mumbai, reflecting her ongoing exploration of how scale, space, and perception shape our experience of art.
