Every painting begins without a predetermined destination. For Priya Gaekwar, the canvas is a space for intuition, where layers of colour, collage and gesture gradually reveal unexpected relationships between memory, material and abstraction. Based in Mumbai, Gaekwar works across acrylic, mixed media and collage, allowing each composition to evolve organically through a process of instinctive mark-making. Inspired by asemic writing and the expressive freedom of abstract calligraphy, she builds richly layered surfaces where traces of earlier gestures remain visible, inviting viewers to uncover their own narratives within the work. Drawing inspiration from everyday experiences, fleeting observations and the quiet accumulation of memory, Gaekwar embraces unpredictability as an essential part of her practice. Rather than seeking fixed outcomes, she allows each painting to unfold through successive layers, creating contemplative works that celebrate process, transformation and the many meanings that emerge through sustained looking.
