Rupesh Sudhanshu

Fragmented human and animal forms set within sparse, charged spaces define Rupesh Sudanshu’s paintings. Working across painting and mixed media, he explores themes of identity, consciousness, and the porous boundary between human and non-human existence. Born in Bihar and working between Mumbai and London, Sudanshu draws from personal memory, caste experience, and philosophical ideas rooted in Brahman thought. His visual language combines expressive mark-making with symbolic motifs influenced by the Sohrai and Khovar tribal traditions of Jharkhand. Through layered figures and minimal environments, his works examine interconnectedness, belief systems, and the tension between tradition and contemporary social realities. Sudanshu studied Fine Art at the University for the Creative Arts in Canterbury and previously completed a master’s degree in design at the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati.

“I sometimes feel my work is guided by a voice that demands to be materialised. Through cycles of construction and deconstruction, the work becomes a symbolic reflection of my own self.”
